I think it's really interesting how this song takes mental disorders, specifically schizophrenia (I think), and turns it into some kind of curse, even incorporating the fact that men are more likely to inherit those things

So I heard this song 6 years ago in a musicly ad, and now I’m rewatching this and I’m realizing who the man is and what he means by “deal” is he suppose to be the devil though?

I come back to this song every now and then because its got a lot of things I really like. Its got some eldritch horror, a faustian bargain, all without being too moody about it. Take the devils characterization for example which i personally enjoy. He picks the perfect moment to worm his way into the equation. The kid in the story is reblling, gets in over his head with substances, and after hes gone through this traumatic experience, this is when the devil comes up to offer a deal. Not only that, but the WAY he offers it is important. He begins by gently inserting himself to this kids nighttime walk and uses his false bravado as an invitation to stay. After that, hes told about the experience and makes a subtle threat. The kid being vulnerable and most likely still shaking off the deep eldritch fear from his visions of his grandfather, will be more affected by that. Then, after establishing the threat, he lightens up and offers all the typical opulance associated with these bargains, classic 'good cop, bad cop' routine. The other thing id like to mention is the key wording he uses 'all the money you can fold, all the power you can hold'. Its very pointed that while hes offering money and power, its purely up to the kid to make actual use of it properly, and the devil will get his usual cut regardless of if the kid gets anything out of the deal. Its classic faustian stuff as usually by the ends of the stories the person making the deal not only loses their soul, but squanders whatever they got out of the deal. So 'all the money you can fold' here being 'i can give you a ton of money to lose on gambling' and 'all the power you can hold' being 'ill give you a bunch of power, and if you hold onto it is up to you'. Its really great stuff for such a condensed interaction

It reminds me of me mate Sully's grandfather a lot. Mental illnesses run in his family, almost everyone was ill in one form or another. He grew up during 80s in a small town in Australian outback, nobody ever heard of, ya know, meds and therapy, or just basic compassion; a place fulla ignorant, spiteful, gossipy bogans. It was a living hell, his parents hated him, each other and pretty much everyone else. The only ray of light was his granddad, from whom Sully probably inherited schizophrenia; the old man was kooky even if you overlook his disorganized speeches and delusions, he had some weird fascination with animal corpses (I know what you're thinking - no, not in that way, he just liked carcasses whether they were intact or just parts), carried them around and got yelled at by his wife for bringing yet another stinky dingo corpse to their backyard. Granddad would only chuckle at that, and little Sully also thought it was hilarious. He still does. He also remembers fondly the times when his granddad would drive with him to animal burial grounds. As someone who grew up in a small town with cemetary taking up 80% of it, I can relate. There's literally nothing else to do. So the thing is, there was something weird going on in that town where Sully grew up. Cattle and animals were disappearing, and then found halved. One half is intact, the other's gone. No fucking animal does that, and it *was* an animal, the teeth marks were those of something remotely big. But why eat only half of an animal? Even the old goat Sully's family had was stolen and found half-eaten, no footprints around (cuz sand). His granddad decided that he had enough just looking at halved carcasses and went to look for the beast (and since he didn't tell that to anyone but him, everyone just assumed that "old man Graham just fucks around as usual"). It went for 3-4 months, basically he just wandered around a bit in the evenings, nothing out of the ordinary. Sully more or less forgot about the whole "hunting down the mysterious beast" thing. Until guess what happened. His granddad went to the nearest city (just a bigger village that had a store) and disappeared. His folks went looking for him, who knows what could happen to him. They found his car easily, it was just on the verge of the road. Looked like he stopped it himself, left in a hurry and ran. His corpse was found just a few minutes after, it's flat desert all around, no trees or grass. You guessed it. It was halved. Just legs, everything else eaten. It might sound like some cheap creepypasta, and it's okay if you think so. But that's not the point. The whole "mysterious beast that is too picky to eat the whole damn thing" wasn't even that big a deal for Sully, it just hurt him a lot that the only person who didn't hate him and who, in his morbid way, tried to cheer him up, was gone in such a sudden and stupid way. I'm just glad he escaped that shithole town, it was something out of "House of a thousand corpses" from his memories.
